Survey of Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) U.S. State and County Population Data
The Survey of Epidemiology and End Results
(SEER) created an
excellent resource
for recent 1969-on U.S. population at the level of the
state or county and by age, race, sex, and more recently Hispanic origin.
The national and state SAS, Stata, and CSV files were created by
Jean Roth
to make these files a bit easier to use.
The corresponding
data files,
data dictionary,
and other documentation are available from
SEER.
Adjusted
files account for large population gains and losses
in counties affected by intense 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The states with adjusted population estimates are Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
Updates and changes.

Other sources of U.S. county population data:
For pre-1969 county data the
Census provides county population estimates for 1900, 1910, ... , 1990.
The University of Virginia Library's
Geostat Center created electronic versions of the 1944-on
County and City Data Books. These have county population estimates
for 1930, 1940, 1943, 1950, 1960.
Paper sources for pre-1969 data include Census Report
P25-427 "Estimates of the population of counties and metropolitan areas, July 1, 1966",and
P25-461 "Components of population change by county: 1960 to 1970".
